Carlsen – Karjakin Game 10 – Part 2

Let’s continue with the tweets of game 10. You can read the first selection here.

So let’s check what happened after the opening,  what do you think @bobbyfiske : “Ah, wife finally went to bed. Now its beer & chess time!”

Cheers!

beerchess1_1_

The 10th game was certainly not the most exciting one and there was enough time to other things: @ebarfoedThe good thing about the game until now…I am getting a lot of work done!

@cyberella:“I was hoping for a Rocky movie today but this is more Bridget Jones’ Diary :/”

However, strange things happened….

@RobertRis:19.Bxe6 is just a tactical blunder. Instead 19.Nd2 looks very pleasant for White. Karjakin one step closer to WC title!”

@anishgiri called it a night: “Red move. Im outta here, the (other) trolls will do the rest!”

But Sergey obviously missed the best move: @LawrenceTrentIM: “Surprise in NY about Karjakin’s 20…d5. Did he overlook the forced draw with Nxf2… Game on now!”

@brigoslingWhy did Sergey not take the forced draw after 20… Nxf2, 21 Kg2 Nh4! (?) This may be the decision that decides the fate of the match.

Switch off your engines!

And there was some advice for the armchair grandmasters from a number of real masters and grandmasters;

computer-chess-computer

(Screenshot from the film “Computer Chess” – 2013)

@GMJtis: “People be paying WAY too much attention to engines today. Humans are playing for the highest stakes. Context, please”.

GM Daniel Gormally, @elgransenor1: “Turn off your engines everyone, look at the position, consider the two players. This is 1-0″

@RobertRis: “Well, actually time to switch off the engines and think by yourself. Tactics are over and White is clearly better!”

And yes, @silviodanailov is also a Grandmaster:” I am very sorry for the Norwegian fans here in NYC but knowing well the Crimea iron soldier he won’t lose this game. Anyway dreaming is free?”

We will see what happens, Silvio! A long endgame coming up, but not everybody wanted to see the grinding live: Silvio’s special friend @nigelshortchess:  “Down to 5 hrs sleep max. & dropping, so I shall say goodnight to all you beautiful people. Prediction – win for the champ”.

Dutch grandmaster @benjamin_bok: “Time to sleep, predicting (and hoping!) to see 1-0 when waking up.”

@almodiahki: “Give Magnus a slight advantage, and leave him on the board for ten hours! He enjoys every second of it!”

And after a long, six-and-a-half-hour game: @forwardchess: “After another marathon, Carlsen equalizes the score! What a match! Next game will be played after the rest day.”

cyeolfyxuaahvnr

@tatav__a: “Yessss!!!! My Thanksgiving wish came true. Thank you King Magnus”.

@johnchess: “Sensation as world chess champion wins a game of chess #aboutbloodytime”

The American top players Caruana and Nakamura tweeted:

@fabianocaruana: “Karjakin gave Carlsen a plump, juicy Thanksgiving turkey today.” @GMHikaru: “Overall, it looked like we saw a high quality WCH game, although this apparent draw with Nxf2 and Nh4 kind of ruins it a little bit.”

You can watch the video of the press conference at your leisure, and here are a few tweets after the show was over.  Let’s go to our Norwegian correspondent @TarjeiJS, who presents us  this example from the press conference“Are you very disappointed?” Karjakin: “No.” “Why?” “Because…” “I am just thinking about chess and not stupid questions”.

@chessmateandy: “Chess media are like the people knocking on the glass in zoos, thinking the animals are there purely for their entertainment”.

@gatorchess: “No matter who is the world champion, Nastia Karlovich must not run another press conference. It’s painful to watch her.” @CazHansen: “I think it is a matter of her having done it before. However, on previous occasions, it was equally painful to watch.”

@knightofgood: “Magnus is a bigger jerk than Garry and close to Bobby – have some class buddy”.

Calm down people, we have a the rest day on Friday, Black Friday, to be precise. Time to go shopping!

@asimpereira: “5-5 score doesnt say everything. Momentum /psychological advantage clearly with Magnus. Seeing rapid tie breaks will be worth every penny!”

Spanish top-GM Paco Vallejo tweets: @chessidharta: “I don’t think Karjak should worry too much , he is a wonderful rapid and blitz player and just 2 more games.”

Two more games (+ tiebreak?) to go. This will not only be exciting for 600 million (haha) chess players around the globe.

One last tweet @terastodon: “I’ve been watching the Chess World Championship for hours and I am unbelievably bad at Chess”.

The Olympiad in Tweets – Round 6

Did you all have a good restday? Recovered from the Bermuda Party?

@chess24.com:” A prearranged brewery tour was arguably not what some members of the organising team needed after the Bermuda Party:)”

brewery

What did you do after the tour, Jan? @GMJanGustafsson: “Slept, ate, shopped and watched Guardians of the Galaxy (good, not great) with @polborta , pretty solid rest day”.

Any news about the FIDE president? @TarjeiJS: “Kirsan complained about Russia & Ukraine being placed on the same hotel. But his people didn’t tell him that it was approved by FIDE!”

Sporty Kirsan, apparantly fed up with “his people”, visited the Polaria:

@PolariaTromso: “Sporty FIDE president Iljumzjinov takes “high five” with seal Loffen at Polaria tonight”.

polaria

Talking about seals: what did you have for lunch , Nigel? @nigelshortchess: “The seal this afternoon tasted unusual. Not sure I would bother eating it regularly though.”

Bon appetit!

Natalia, how was your day? @pogonina: “Rest day at Chess Olympiad. We decided to go on a boat trip”.

nataliaboat

“It looks a little chilly on the boat, but the scenery is amazing!”

Lots of things to talk about, huh? The games, the party…

@pogonina: “The conversations we have been having are quite hilarious, but most of them can’t be reproduced in public :D”

@SilviaDanailov was busy on his restday, giving interviews: “My interview with Norwegian TV2 today. The topics: Tromso 2014, politics, elections, etc, etc.

danailov

The etc. etc. part sounds very interesting, what do you think, @TarjeiJS?  “I do think Sivio Danialov needs to explain why he was pictured in the Chess Olympiad hall with two cell phones.”

@goranurosevic (in election mode ?) “Danailov’s phones are just a smoke-screen, totally irrelevant” .

There a still  a lot of chess experts and journalists coming to Tromsø for the second part of the Olympiad. Maybe they have some stories for us?  @theparasg: “So many journalists at the Chess Olympiad but no truly interesting stories making it to their Twitter. Maybe we need another Fischer?”

BTW; what is the first thing to do when you arrive, @LennartOotes? Arrived at the Tromso Chess Olympiad and immediately performed the Tinder check: I found only two chess girls on this dating platform.  wtf”.

tinder

Perhaps, Lennart should try one of the #tromsopickuplines: @bioniclime: “How about I fianchetto my bishop in your pawn triangle?” or @elbandie: “Mind if I back rank you?”

@chessninja: You know, guys with big Elos are probably trying to compensate for something.”

Round 6

Back to business, back to chess. Big game (again) today for Magnus Carlsen: @manju2006: “Magnus will be playing the opponent who has the right attitude and the strengh to become his challenger for the world title”. But what is his name?  @EinarGausdal: “Today’s top rating matchup will be Caruana(2801)-Carlsen(2877) as the home team’s first line-up takes on Italy”.

@GMJanGustafsson: “Norway-Italy means that Magnus Carlsen will face the World Number 3 2 games in a row..”

And there are some other high rated games ahead: @megalovic: R6 highest combined Elo Caruana-Carlsen 5678 Adams-Aronian 5545 Kasimdzhanov-Kramnik 5460 Mamedyarov-Jobava 5456 Le-Leko 5450″.

Do you have a particular game you want to follow, Jovan? @FSTIMJP “Great. But, Don Kaituu vs Diamini Sbonelo will possibly be a more entertaining game to follow.” What do you think, Robert? @RobertRis: “The rest day is over! Fireworks expected in game of two of my fav players: Mamedyarov-Jobava!”

The games

Tweet on move 1: @Chess24.com“Breaking news 🙂 Carlsen meets Caruana’s 1.e4 with 1…d5!?”@PoisondPwnPress: “Carlsen plays the Scandinavian. Gonna be a good day!”

@Tromso2014: “The clash between world #1 and world #2 has just started!”

carlsencaruana

The excellent pictures under this twitter account are made by David Llada. It is not only a good idea to follow this account, but also the Twitter account @Lladini. Cool stuff, David!

And David Llada becomes a celebrity himself!

davidllada

@nadja_wittmann: “@leontxogarcia entrevistando a @lladini para @chessbase

Any news from our roving “zero-tolerance” reporter? @TarjeiJS:“Zero tolerance forfeits in Round 6: The whole Burundi women team and one Burundi player in the open.”

@Fantasy_Chess:Did they continue on from the Burmuda party to the Burundi party? Must have been epic!”

Another big game this round, according to @garylanechess:” I think Adams will beat World no2 Aronian in todays game. All my predictions are right. Almost.” @TarjeiJS, have a look at England vs. Armenia, please? “Adams (ENG)-Aronian (ARM) 1/2-1/2 after 31 moves and only 1,5 hours.”

Talking about England: how is the weather @home, Mark?  @MarkTwic: “We saw rainstorms two days ago at the Olympiad.  Seems to have arrived outside my door in the UK” now. And Mark added a little later: “Gee whiz! Huge lightening strike nearby me!”

Back to the games. UZB-RUS is an interesting match.  @chess24.com: “Kasimdzhanov has beaten Naiditsch, Ivanchuk & Kramnik in a row to move to his highest ever (live) rating. No jinxes”. @top40chess: “Kasimdzhanov catapults into the top 40 with his win against Kramnik – he’s at world #35 after gaining 12 places so far in the Chess Olympiad.”

And what is going on in the game of the day? @Chessnotes: R6: Carlsen displays that ” ‘Ol Black Magic” & somehow upends Caruana from even position. @Skrivanth_Govind: “Caruana succumbed to Carlsen’s magic which detracted him in the endgame”. @BobbyFiske: “Magnus just expelled Caruana from the exclusive Elo-2800 club in R6”.

Great  game by Magnus again, what do you think, Vozi? @voziedwards: “Carlsen with black again waiting for his opponent to blunder rather than playing chess.”

The USA won 3-1 today vs. Paraguay, but the top boards Nakamura and Kamsky are struggling and only managed two draws: @Chessnotes:USA left wondering what could have been, if 1-4 lineup were Caruana, Nakamura, So, Kamsky…”

Again, not many tweets about the women’s section.  However, I found an interesting one: @PoisondPwnPress: “Judit Polgar and Hou Yifan combined score of 8-0. Both creeping up towards 2700.”

Maybe the women will get more attention on Saturday: @chess24.com: “In Round 7 the women steal the show, with no. 2 seeds Russia vs. no. 1 seeds China on the top table!”

This could be a very exciting match! It is a very exciting Olympiad, anyway, what do you think, Nora?

@Souleidis:“NRK reporter Nora Thorp Bjørnstad is excited about Chess Olympiad”.

nora

I think a lot of male chess players are excited about Nora!  🙂 Is she on Tinder? Ask Lennart.

Two final tweets for today:

@stuthefox: “Russian Chess Federation “suing” Norwegian Tromso 2014 organisers, and Russian government banning imports of Norwegian salmon. Connected?”

@fact: “Eating fish improves IQ and memory”

Enjoy your meal (fish today?)
